MSTAR’S TOUCH PANEL CONTROLLER SOLUTION HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY INTERNATIONAL LEADING HANDSET BRANDS FOR ENTRY-LEVEL SMARTPHONES WITH MASS PRODUCTION IN Q2’12 |
 |
Leveraging its best-in-class multimedia technologies and applications, MStar has built a solid leading position in “PDA phone” and “smartphone-like feature phone” markets since official launch of its mobile communication solutions in Q3’10. MStar, once again ahead of competition, launched its industry-leading capacitive-type touch panel controller solution by leveraging one-layer ITO technologies to assist its customers with the most cost competitive platform to target the huge market potentials driven by strong demand from upgrade of smartphone-like feature phones and emergence of entry-level smartphones.
End-market consumers are requiring a much better user interface and perfectly seamless interactions with mobile devices as there are more and more innovative applications and fancier multimedia entertainments coming out in the market. However, still more than half of handsets in emerging markets are equipped with poorly-performed resistive-type touch panels due to cost constraints. In order to fulfill the urgent need for continued hardware upgrade and entry-level smartphones, MStar pioneeringly introduced capacitive-type touch panel controller solution based on one-layer ITO with a specific market focus on 2.8” to 5” mainstream handset screens and became the first solution provider successfully launching and starting mass production with good yield for one-layer ITO touch panel controller in Greater China market. MStar’s industry-leading touch panel controller solution not only effectively narrows down cost differences between resistive-type touch panel and capacitive-type one but also assures consistent quality throughout mass production, supported by MStar’s best-in-class technologies and all-round services, while largely shortening overall time-to-market requirements. Its customers can thus always be in the lead launching more cost competitive end-market products running at full capacity and at the same time maintaining consistent production quality.
Such a cost competitive capacitive-type touch panel controller solution has been gaining overwhelming tractions since its launch in the second half of 2011, and already been adopted by many leaders in China and emerging markets to further strengthen their competitiveness and leadership by market share. Moreover, this unparalleled solution has also been recognized by several international leading handset brands with mass production scheduled in Q2 this year for other overseas markets. Driven by increasingly strong demand from continued upgrade of smartphone-like feature phones and urged emergence of entry-level smartphones, this competitive touch panel controller solution is expected to be another powerful driving force for MStar’s overall business.

Antix Game Player on New Generation of MStar TV Platforms |
 |
For the first time, Game Console quality 3D games are now available built into even Entry Level small screen TV. MStar and Antix have worked together to implement the Antix Game Player on MStar’s latest single chip TV. Antix Game Player ("AGP") is able to utilize fully the high end CPU and 3D graphics engine from the MStar TV chip to bring real game console experience to even entry level TV.
AGP is designed for consumers who want to play casual and premium 2D and 3D games on their televisions and set-top boxes with a visual quality akin to that of a game console. Highly cost effective and not requiring fast broadband, the Antix TV Game Service is viable for consumers across both mature economies and emerging markets.
Antix and MStar Semiconductor, the leading supplier of solutions for connected TV, announced a joint collaboration last year, the objective of which was to enable high quality games from entry-level to high-end televisions and set-top boxes. The results are on display at MStar Semiconductor’s Stand from 9th to 13th September at IBC in Amsterdam (Hall 5 stand C15).
Francis Charig, Antix’s Chief Executive said,"Running the Antix Game Player on the MStar TV SoC opens the door for TV makers to add serious game capability to their TV. This will be particularly interesting in small screen TV used in Teenagers bedroom where the TV is a 1-to-1 experience and games of this quality truly add value to the TV."
Trevor Neal, Vice President of MStar said,"Integrating games on a TV has historically been model-specific which developers have found impractical. The combination of MStar’s very high performance TV solution with Antix’s Game Player platform and service has changed the dynamics, making it economically viable for developers to target TVs in large volume. The performance of the TV is growing so fast that game developers can now consider that they don’t need an expensive proprietary games console to deploy high end games direct to consumers in the home."

Verimatrix and MSTAR Partner to Bring Advanced Cardless Security Solution to New Markets |
 |
VCAS for DVB offers Digital TV Operators Secure, Cost Effective Set-top Box Options
Hsinchu, Taiwan and San Diego, Mar. 14, 2011 – Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, announced that it has ported its hardened Verimatrix ViewRightR STB for DVB client security onto the MStar 785X system-on-chip (SoC) series. MStar now offers the 785X with advanced cardless security support that enables digital TV operators to deploy cost-effective, high-performance set-top boxes (STBs).
The integrated Verimatrix-MStar solution provides a next-generation approach for DVB conditional access (CA) that not only reduces the cost and maintenance of STBs, but also speeds time to market to reach a broad subscriber base in a digital TV deployment.
"We are focused on helping leading equipment manufacturers quickly develop products that will impact the market. MStar 785X advanced secure STB products are the best choice for quick time-to-market, cost-effective and cutting-edge technology for operators on the market today,” said Philippe Notton, DTV marketing director, MStar. "Partnering with Verimatrix to extend our advanced security features provides a very attractive solution for digital TV operators to cost-effectively deploy set-top boxes that do not rely on smart cards.”
"Video convergence is happening on many levels throughout the value chain. SoC vendors are providing more advanced embedded security features to help ‘level the playing field’ for all types of operators in different regions,” said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer, Verimatrix. "We are proud to bring the choice of VCAS cardless security to new digital TV markets with MStar.”
ViewRight STB for DVB is a robust package of portable embedded code that implements the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS?) for DVB security functions within each STB in a digital TV system. ViewRight STB code has been designed to integrate with native hardware support for cryptographic and secure storage functions present in the advanced subsystems available on SoC devices but present a standardized set of uniform revenue security interfaces to STB middleware.
An important capability of the VCAS for DVB solution is enabling operators to mix different STB client device types in the same network to suit the business profile of their subscribers. For example, cost effective cardless DVB broadcast clients can be operated and managed alongside smart card-based STBs (including use of DVB-CI (Common Interface) modules) and advanced hybrid devices targeted at higher ARPU accounts with IP connectivity.

Taiwan's MStar supplies a huge number of TV makers with internet connected middleware. This contract adds an end-to-end games service including content and store to the offer.
Antix Labs' native games use a secure file format, similar in concept to MP3 for music or MPEG for video, so users can play the same title across different devices such as TVs, tablets and phone. DRM enables the games to be copied and virally shared with their friends and family, across the cloud.
"MStar's success in supplying TV solutions has been remarkable. Antix's products and its associated publishing community enable MStar to strengthen its comprehensive solutions in TV and also across the many other screens in which MStar is active and taking increasing market share," said Francis Charig, Antix's CEO.
Trevor Neal, VP of MStar, added: "The Antix Game player is a complete product and gives all our TV customers a simple way to meet the demands of an increasingly expectant market by offering the user best-in-class, casual and premium gaming services with downloadable native content."

MSTAR INTEGRATES CIVOLUTION WATERMARKING TECHNOLOGY IN CHIPSET |
 |
Civolution, a leading provider of technology and services for identifying, managing and monetizing media content, today announced that MStar Semiconductor Inc. is the first Semiconductor manufacturer to offer a hardware integration of Civolution's NexGuard -PayTV forensic watermarking core into its MSD3A11 chipset.
"The hardware integration of NexGuard - PayTV technology in MStar's MSD3A11 chipset evidences Civolution's commitment to make this technology available in the most efficient and flexible way" said Alex Terpstra, CEO of Civolution. "By making each illegal content copy traceable, further critical protection is offered to content owners, making them more comfortable to grant premium content in an early window and provides greater financial opportunities for all stakeholders".
Using Civolution's NexGuard - PayTV solution, the recently re-branded solution originally known as VTrack and part of Civolution extensive range of forensic watermarking products, MStar's chipsets embed a unique watermark into video material in real-time each time a program is viewed. By adding the unique watermark to the video, content copies become unique, enabling the identification of any potential misuse. With its extremely small footprint, NexGuard - PayTV requires very little overhead on the chipset. Yet, the solution is highly robust and is designed to survive camcorder-capture and subsequent degradation of the content for internet usage. NexGuard - PayTV offers additional content protection complementary to conditional access or other forms of digital rights management on all device outputs. The solution is available in hardware or as a software library, compatible with satellite, cable, DTT and IPTV distribution, and supports linear broadcast, VOD, NVOD, Push VOD and in-home re-distribution.
"We are delighted to be working with Civolution and be one of the first chipset manufacturer to integrate the NexGuard - PayTV core into Silicon," comments Philippe Notton, Director of STB of MStar. "The media industry is increasingly suffering from piracy and needs to find new ways to monetize content. With this solution we can now offer our customers an extra layer of protection, making viewing of early-release and HD content safe and secure."
Civolution will be exhibiting at the upcoming IBC 2009 conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (September 11-15), booth 5.B18.
