MStar and Irdeto Partner to Secure Android for Use in Pay TV Set-Top Boxes
top

Amsterdam, 8 September 2016 – MStar Semiconductor, Inc., a leading semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, and Irdeto, the world leader in digital platform security, today announced a partnership to enable the secure delivery of premium content to Android set-top boxes (STBs). Through this partnership, Irdeto and MStar now provide a comprehensive set of hardware and software security technologies for Android STBs.

Android provides the basis for new user experiences that consumers want and the flexibility that pay TV operators need; however, the platform also presents a major challenge to secure. Providing high-value, premium content requires employing innovative hardware and software security solutions to ensure the platform cannot be compromised. By combining the strength of Irdeto’s dynamic security technologies, including Irdeto Cloaked CA and Irdeto ActiveCloak with the MStar’s SOC implementation of Irdeto FlexiCore, the partnership provides operators with peace-of-mind to securely deploy Android solutions.

Applying security to an open platform like Android is critical given the investment required to roll-out new set-top boxes. Implementing dynamic security technologies such as anti-debug, integrity verification, code diversification and white-box cryptography are crucial to remain secure in a world of evolving threats.

"The Android platform is a convenient platform for operators to deploy many new services to fulfill end-user demand. Integrating Irdeto’s flexible security technology into MStar SOC enables deployment of multiple business models while ensuring a secure platform to protect operators’ revenue. Our integration of Irdeto security on the Android platform with TEE successfully combines the benefits of that OS with robust, future-proof security that can support even the most stringent requirements, such as for 4K or UHD. We are proud to combine forces with Irdeto to present this solution to fulfill our customers’ demand,” said Wayne Tsai, Marketing Director, MStar.

“As the demand to deploy next-generation platforms like Android STBs has increased, so have the number of threats targeting these devices,” said Steeve Huin, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, Irdeto. “As a result, it is critical for operators to employ a security solution that is flexible and is able to rapidly respond to changing threats. This collaboration with MStar provides operators with an easy and secure way to leverage Android.”

top

• Companies complete integration of NAGRA On-Chip Security (NOCS3) with MStar K6 and K7Plus set-top box (STB) chips and EMC5 television chip.

• Solutions use NAGRA anyCAST CONNECT converged CAS/DRM client in connected STBs and TVs to enable studio-approved 4K-UHD services.

• Pre-integration with NAGRA MediaLive OS, RDK 2 and Android provides diverse service providers with maximum STB user experience choice.

CHESEAUX, Switzerland – September 7, 2016 - NAGRA, a digital TV division of the Kudelski Group (SIX:KUD.S) and the world's leading independent provider of content protection and multiscreen television solutions, and MStar Semiconductor, Inc., a leading global semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, announced today the completion of integration of NAGRA’s NOCS3 hardware security technologies directly into MStar’s System-On-Chips (SoCs) for connected STBs and Connected TVs. This gives pay-TV operators superior security for high-value pay-TV services and enables them to license 4K-UHD and HDR content from all major Hollywood studios.

NAGRA NOCS3 and anyCAST CONNECT converged CAS/DRM client are now directly integrated into MStar chipsets and the MStar Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). The joint STB solution integrates NAGRA’s NOCS3 technology with MStar’s K6 and K7Plus chipsets, enabling two-way cable operators and telcos to deploy advanced boxes supporting connected broadcast, IPTV, operator OTT and third-party OTT services like Netflix, and in-home content distribution, all secured by a single CONNECT client. The joint solution has also been pre-integrated with NAGRA MediaLive OS, RDK 2 and Android operating systems in order to provide service providers with a wide variety of choices.

The MStar EMC5 television SoC integration enables pay-TV service providers to deliver high-value premium content directly to supported TVs without a set-top box while still meeting strict MovieLabs standards for Enhanced Content Protection. Service providers can implement their own Electronic Program Guide using the TV manufacturer’s SDK or the HbbTV standard.

“We are pleased to be working with MStar to bring NAGRA’s next-generation converged CAS/DRM solutions directly to their range of set-top box and TV SoC’s,” said Maurice van Riek, Senior Vice President, Head of Content and Asset Security for NAGRA. “By working together, we enable MSOs and telcos to pursue new business models like Direct-to-TV pay-TV services, as well as making their operations more efficient by centralizing security into a single client and a single Security Services Platform that also embraces other 3rd-party DRMs.”

“MStar’s high-caliber set-top-box and TV chipsets can provide the perfect solution to pay-TV companies who wish to offer the world’s most valuable content to their customers,” said Wayne Tsai, Marketing Director at MStar Semiconductor, Inc. “Our work with NAGRA provides a robust security solution for the 4K-UHD Connected TV and STB market, and provides innovative new ways to deliver premium pay-TV services to new market segments.”

Futarque Release MStar based Android STB development Kit
top

Futarque, today announced the release of their DVB-T2 based Android STB development kit. The kit is available as small complete STB motherboard that can be purchased directly in large volume and used as the heart of a STB development.

The design uses Futarque’s DVB software stack incorporated into Android OS. Futarque have then added an Android Application called Aurora TV that can be used to watch TV.

The Aurora TV App can work either with the built in DVB-T2 tuner or it can hunt out any network tuners (for example SAT-IP) that are available on your home network and stream video from those direct to your TV.

The Aurora TV application can be quickly customised by Futarque for individual customers specific requirements. Alternatively for larger customer who have their own development teams then Futarque can provide the source code for the application under licence to allow STB makers to do the customisation themselves.

The Futarque STB board uses the MStar MSO9280, this is a highly featured chipset with 7000DMIPS Quad core ARM Coretex A7 CPU and ARM Mali 450 Graphics processor. Futarque have optimised the Android OS for this board giving very high performance. The video decoder supports HEVC including some H265 formats, plus H264 VP, AVS, Real Media, VC-1 and a 4K UHD to HD transcoder, plus a H264 video encoder.

Futarque and MStar to bring Android Control to the Smart Home
top

MStar Semiconductor, Inc., collaborating with the Danish design house Futarque has today launched a development system called “Rho board” which enables designers to easily incorporate Android into smart home devices.

The solution is available as a ready to use small motherboard that can be incorporated into many devices. The devices include a 40 pin GPIO connector that can interface to the hardware in the home device.

The unique feature of this solution is that the developer does not have to learn the intricacies of the Android operating system. Futarque has added some extensions to the Android OS that means the developer can create his entire product as an Android APP. This gives the developer access to a huge range of features at very minimal effort. For example a device to open your gates can be created that uses Android face recognition via a USB camera and then uses the GPIO to activate the gate opener. Another example is the board may be added into a Gym running machine to allow the running machine to interface easily with your smart phone or tablet instantly uploading your statistics during the run. There are thousands of similar applications in industrial automation where the small Rho board will be very useful.

The Rho Board product is demonstrated on MStar Stand at IBC. Speaking at IBC Jesper Kaagaard CTO of Futarque said “We have enabled any developer who can write an Android App to easily control the real world. The developer simply can use the freely available Android app development tools and very quickly create a fully featured very powerful application. These type of application would be very difficult to create under Linux without the power of the android OS.”

MStar launches world first 4k STB solution with HDR to SDR conversion
top

MStar Semiconductor Inc. today demonstrated its leadership in the STB technology race by releasing its new range of 4K STB chipsets. The chipset family will be demonstrated on MStar Stand at IBC show in Amsterdam.

“The new product range includes some unique features that will enable MStar’s customers to take a strong lead in the move to 4K,” said Trevor Neal, Vice President of MStar. “Many operators want to launch their 4K service with High Dynamic Range (HDR) enabled to give even better picture quality. However until now this has been difficult to do as the majority of the installed TV in people’s home does not support HDR. The new MStar STB solutions solve this problem as if the STB detects the TV does not support HDR then the STB can convert the signal back to Standard SDR signal. This allows the operator to start rolling our HDR services knowing that as users upgrade their TV in the future they will immediately be able to take advantage of the HDR feature. ”

MStar is well known as the leader in TV solutions and has been shipping 4K decoders for over 3 years. This gives MStar a huge advantage in designing a STB chip as it means we fully understand the TV design. MStar has used this advantage to add another feature into the STB solution. If the MStar based STB detects that the TV has a programmable backlight then the MStar STB solution can control the backlight in the TV to simulate HDR even on a SDR TV.

In addition to the HDR to SRD converter, the MStar 4K solution also includes dual 4K decoding, enabling 4K picture-in-picture (PIP) features, plus uniquely the ability to use 4K User Interface. These features have been proven in previous generation of MStar TV chips and allow MStar to bring mature technology into the STB solution.

The MStar STB chipset will be demonstrated on MStar Suite on the Balcony of Hall 1 in IBC this week. MStar is inviting engagements from leading customers who are considering new 4K STB designs.

Pay-TV operators benefit from direct access to fully featured and pre-integrated NAGRA CAS and DRM functionality on Connected TVs integrating the MStar SoC;

The joint NAGRA/MStar solution will be available to TV vendors in 2015, with TV vendors planning to bring the first models to market in 2016

CHESEAUX, Switzerland – DATE XX, 2015 - NAGRA, a digital TV division of the Kudelski Group (SIX:KUD.S) and the world's leading independent provider of content protection and multiscreen television solutions, and MStar, a leading global semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, announced today the integration of key NAGRA security technologies directly into MStar’s System-On-Chips for 4K UHD Connected TVs.

By integrating NAGRA’s NOCS for TV and anyCAST CONNECT client directly into MStar chipsets and MStar Trusted Execution Environments (TEE), pay-TV service providers will be able to deliver high-value premium content directly to TVs without a set-top box while still meeting strict Hollywood standards for content protection. NAGRA’s anyCAST CONNECT converged CAS/DRM client supports DVB broadcast, IPTV as well as OTT and Home Networking use cases including whole-home DVR. Service providers can implement their own Electronic Program Guide using the TV manufacturer’s SDK or the HBBTV standard.

The CONNECT client can be activated by pay-TV service providers via a simple sign-up process on the TV itself, similar to the way people sign up for pure OTT services. This allows co-promotion business models with TV vendors, enabling, for example, a free trial pay-TV service period without needing to ship or install a set-top-box. The solution reduces barriers to entry, increases service take-up, and reduces subscriber acquisition costs.

Recent forecasts from ABI Research show global shipments of Ultra HD televisions growing by a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 49.5%, from nearly 12M units in 2014 to nearly 134M units in 2020. This represents a tremendous opportunity for pay-TV service providers to leverage these devices as new platforms on which to offer their premium services.

“By working with MStar to bring NAGRA’s next-generation connected security solutions directly to 4K UHD TV sets, we are giving our clients new ways to increase their market share and sign up new customers spontaneously from the comfort of their own couches,” said Maurice van Riek, Head of Content and Asset Security for NAGRA. “More importantly, without compromising on security, pay-TV service providers can deliver their full bouquet of premium content directly on the TV screen for OTT, DVB and IPTV without the need for an additional STB or CA Module.”

“With the surging demand for 4K Ultra HD devices and the need for new ways to securely deliver content and acquire new subscribers, we are pleased that MStar’s high-caliber STB and TV technology can provide the perfect solution,” said Wayne Tsai, Marketing Director at MStar Semiconductor, Inc. “NAGRA’s NOCS for TV and anyCAST CONNECT with MStar TEE offers a robust security solution for the 4K UHD Connected TV market, and provides innovative new ways to deliver premium pay-TV services to new market segments.”

top

Advanced Verimatrix VideoMark Solution Enhances Revenue Security of Premium UHD/4K Content

Amsterdam, IBC 2015, 1 Sept. 2015 – MStar Semiconductor, Inc., a leading global semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, today announced that it has integrated Verimatrix VideoMark™ forensic watermarking technology into its system-on-chips (SoCs) for UHD set-top boxes (STBs), as well as its OTT/IP STB. As a result of the collaboration, MStar’s STBs now meet the redefined security requirements for UHD/4K video services as described in the MovieLabs Specification for Enhanced Content Protection.

VideoMark defends directly against the content redistribution attacks that are becoming much more common as a result of higher quality content being more widely available for transmission over fast broadband networks. Watermarking also makes it possible to detect where infringing content streams are coming from and so enable detection. Integrating VideoMark with MStar’s SoCs enables operators to securely, robustly and imperceptibly embed identifying information within copies of premium media content to help establish secure end-to-end chains of custody. VideoMark is a featured component of VCAS Ultra™, the next-generation of the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) architecture.

“Verimatrix takes a multi-pronged approach to UHD revenue security that encompasses hardware-based security, trusted software security, and forensic watermarking,” said Petr Peterka, CTO, Verimatrix. “We are uniquely positioned to provide a balanced, integrated approach to security that supports all three of these elements, and we are pleased to work with MStar to help augment their hardware-based security initiatives.”

“With growing demand to acquire Ultra HD content, the content distribution market is responding with cutting edge technologies that comply with Studios’ requirement. We are committed to providing the highest level of security for our customers,” said Wayne Tsai, Marketing Director at MStar. “With this in mind, we chose to partner with Verimatrix and deploy its sophisticated VideoMark technology as the company is a pioneer in the practical application and commercialization of forensic video marking solutions.”

MSTAR’S TOUCH PANEL CONTROLLER SOLUTION HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY INTERNATIONAL LEADING HANDSET BRANDS FOR ENTRY-LEVEL SMARTPHONES WITH MASS PRODUCTION IN Q2’12
top

Leveraging its best-in-class multimedia technologies and applications, MStar has built a solid leading position in “PDA phone” and “smartphone-like feature phone” markets since official launch of its mobile communication solutions in Q3’10. MStar, once again ahead of competition, launched its industry-leading capacitive-type touch panel controller solution by leveraging one-layer ITO technologies to assist its customers with the most cost competitive platform to target the huge market potentials driven by strong demand from upgrade of smartphone-like feature phones and emergence of entry-level smartphones.

End-market consumers are requiring a much better user interface and perfectly seamless interactions with mobile devices as there are more and more innovative applications and fancier multimedia entertainments coming out in the market. However, still more than half of handsets in emerging markets are equipped with poorly-performed resistive-type touch panels due to cost constraints. In order to fulfill the urgent need for continued hardware upgrade and entry-level smartphones, MStar pioneeringly introduced capacitive-type touch panel controller solution based on one-layer ITO with a specific market focus on 2.8” to 5” mainstream handset screens and became the first solution provider successfully launching and starting mass production with good yield for one-layer ITO touch panel controller in Greater China market. MStar’s industry-leading touch panel controller solution not only effectively narrows down cost differences between resistive-type touch panel and capacitive-type one but also assures consistent quality throughout mass production, supported by MStar’s best-in-class technologies and all-round services, while largely shortening overall time-to-market requirements. Its customers can thus always be in the lead launching more cost competitive end-market products running at full capacity and at the same time maintaining consistent production quality.

Such a cost competitive capacitive-type touch panel controller solution has been gaining overwhelming tractions since its launch in the second half of 2011, and already been adopted by many leaders in China and emerging markets to further strengthen their competitiveness and leadership by market share. Moreover, this unparalleled solution has also been recognized by several international leading handset brands with mass production scheduled in Q2 this year for other overseas markets. Driven by increasingly strong demand from continued upgrade of smartphone-like feature phones and urged emergence of entry-level smartphones, this competitive touch panel controller solution is expected to be another powerful driving force for MStar’s overall business.

Antix Game Player on New Generation of MStar TV Platforms
top

For the first time, Game Console quality 3D games are now available built into even Entry Level small screen TV. MStar and Antix have worked together to implement the Antix Game Player on MStar’s latest single chip TV. Antix Game Player ("AGP") is able to utilize fully the high end CPU and 3D graphics engine from the MStar TV chip to bring real game console experience to even entry level TV.

AGP is designed for consumers who want to play casual and premium 2D and 3D games on their televisions and set-top boxes with a visual quality akin to that of a game console. Highly cost effective and not requiring fast broadband, the Antix TV Game Service is viable for consumers across both mature economies and emerging markets.

Antix and MStar Semiconductor, the leading supplier of solutions for connected TV, announced a joint collaboration last year, the objective of which was to enable high quality games from entry-level to high-end televisions and set-top boxes. The results are on display at MStar Semiconductor’s Stand from 9th to 13th September at IBC in Amsterdam (Hall 5 stand C15).

Francis Charig, Antix’s Chief Executive said,"Running the Antix Game Player on the MStar TV SoC opens the door for TV makers to add serious game capability to their TV. This will be particularly interesting in small screen TV used in Teenagers bedroom where the TV is a 1-to-1 experience and games of this quality truly add value to the TV."

Trevor Neal, Vice President of MStar said,"Integrating games on a TV has historically been model-specific which developers have found impractical. The combination of MStar’s very high performance TV solution with Antix’s Game Player platform and service has changed the dynamics, making it economically viable for developers to target TVs in large volume. The performance of the TV is growing so fast that game developers can now consider that they don’t need an expensive proprietary games console to deploy high end games direct to consumers in the home."

Verimatrix and MSTAR Partner to Bring Advanced Cardless Security Solution to New Markets
top

VCAS for DVB offers Digital TV Operators Secure, Cost Effective Set-top Box Options

Hsinchu, Taiwan and San Diego, Mar. 14, 2011 – Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, announced that it has ported its hardened Verimatrix ViewRightR STB for DVB client security onto the MStar 785X system-on-chip (SoC) series. MStar now offers the 785X with advanced cardless security support that enables digital TV operators to deploy cost-effective, high-performance set-top boxes (STBs).

The integrated Verimatrix-MStar solution provides a next-generation approach for DVB conditional access (CA) that not only reduces the cost and maintenance of STBs, but also speeds time to market to reach a broad subscriber base in a digital TV deployment.

"We are focused on helping leading equipment manufacturers quickly develop products that will impact the market. MStar 785X advanced secure STB products are the best choice for quick time-to-market, cost-effective and cutting-edge technology for operators on the market today,” said Philippe Notton, DTV marketing director, MStar. "Partnering with Verimatrix to extend our advanced security features provides a very attractive solution for digital TV operators to cost-effectively deploy set-top boxes that do not rely on smart cards.”

"Video convergence is happening on many levels throughout the value chain. SoC vendors are providing more advanced embedded security features to help ‘level the playing field’ for all types of operators in different regions,” said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer, Verimatrix. "We are proud to bring the choice of VCAS cardless security to new digital TV markets with MStar.”

ViewRight STB for DVB is a robust package of portable embedded code that implements the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS?) for DVB security functions within each STB in a digital TV system. ViewRight STB code has been designed to integrate with native hardware support for cryptographic and secure storage functions present in the advanced subsystems available on SoC devices but present a standardized set of uniform revenue security interfaces to STB middleware.

An important capability of the VCAS for DVB solution is enabling operators to mix different STB client device types in the same network to suit the business profile of their subscribers. For example, cost effective cardless DVB broadcast clients can be operated and managed alongside smart card-based STBs (including use of DVB-CI (Common Interface) modules) and advanced hybrid devices targeted at higher ARPU accounts with IP connectivity.

MSTAR INTEGRATES CIVOLUTION WATERMARKING TECHNOLOGY IN CHIPSET
top

Civolution, a leading provider of technology and services for identifying, managing and monetizing media content, today announced that MStar Semiconductor Inc. is the first Semiconductor manufacturer to offer a hardware integration of Civolution's NexGuard -PayTV forensic watermarking core into its MSD3A11 chipset.

"The hardware integration of NexGuard - PayTV technology in MStar's MSD3A11 chipset evidences Civolution's commitment to make this technology available in the most efficient and flexible way" said Alex Terpstra, CEO of Civolution. "By making each illegal content copy traceable, further critical protection is offered to content owners, making them more comfortable to grant premium content in an early window and provides greater financial opportunities for all stakeholders".

Using Civolution's NexGuard - PayTV solution, the recently re-branded solution originally known as VTrack and part of Civolution extensive range of forensic watermarking products, MStar's chipsets embed a unique watermark into video material in real-time each time a program is viewed. By adding the unique watermark to the video, content copies become unique, enabling the identification of any potential misuse. With its extremely small footprint, NexGuard - PayTV requires very little overhead on the chipset. Yet, the solution is highly robust and is designed to survive camcorder-capture and subsequent degradation of the content for internet usage. NexGuard - PayTV offers additional content protection complementary to conditional access or other forms of digital rights management on all device outputs. The solution is available in hardware or as a software library, compatible with satellite, cable, DTT and IPTV distribution, and supports linear broadcast, VOD, NVOD, Push VOD and in-home re-distribution.

"We are delighted to be working with Civolution and be one of the first chipset manufacturer to integrate the NexGuard - PayTV core into Silicon," comments Philippe Notton, Director of STB of MStar. "The media industry is increasingly suffering from piracy and needs to find new ways to monetize content. With this solution we can now offer our customers an extra layer of protection, making viewing of early-release and HD content safe and secure."

Civolution will be exhibiting at the upcoming IBC 2009 conference in Amsterdam,
The Netherlands (September 11-15), booth 5.B18.
